I have never use an indicator, I know that there can be benefits as to why you would need to use one, but Have always been curious, when an indicator is needed, I have always felt the line when a trout hit 90% of the time and with using light leaders I would think it would effect the way you cast and the presentation of the fly, also how far up the leader would one need to place an indicator, and I've seen styrofoam to yarn type indicator, anyone has any ideas or help explain this to me

Re: Using an indicator
I've tried indicators on some spring creeks when I lived in Wisconsin but really didn't care for them. I used the foam kind where you can move them around easily enough to match the depth of the water. And, you do get to watch the drift much better, but I just never quite got the hang of it I guess.
I caught fish after I quit using the indicator. I don't know if that has anything to do with the indicator or, more likely, the time of day.

Re: Using an indicator
yeah, it's the same with me, i prefer to use them on deep holes drifting nypmhs when casting isn't so dependent, but it could be good, but like everything else it's what your preference is, if you haven't used them, i wouldn't recomend using it when casting, yes it will effect your cast especially in windy situations, the prefer methods is using an indicator in deep flowing streams or creeks drifting nymph into those deep holes.
