Re: Best Fly for Small Mouth Tactic
My best guess for you up there, and this is a great fly to use down here in Texas for our smallies is a San juan worms, but at times they can be very picky, usually we drift these worms and wait for it to hit, but majority of the small mouth that we go after are lakes so drifting is our of the questions, don`t know how picky the smallies are in Montanna, but a medium to fast long take with a second pause of your lines should do the trick, works great near sandy to rocky bottoms, as these worms imitate fleeing back torward sand.

I have had a lot of luck using clouser minnows (yellow and white) as well as drifting wooly buggers (any color but with flash).
I also (in the summer) catch a lot of them on dry flies. Elk hair caddis and such.

Nice size smallies, I'm clueless when it comes to Fly fishing, but I know or guess that some of the best fly fishing has to do with certain types of insect, and on your last picture theres something on the rock, is that the flies you use to try to imitate in the river, and I'm seriously at a need to know basic as some of the questions I get ask working at a tackle stores is pretty embarassing when i get the questions about flies and don't know the answer to them, usually i point to my buddy behind the cash register.

Those are stoneflies. If you go to any stream/river/pond and start flipping over rocks or check near the shore you are bound to find a few. Gives you a great idea on what to tie on. Also, most places give a hatch report and the times of year that things are hatching. Google is a wonderful tool!

Ditto on the Clouser minnows and Wooly buggers. If the water and rocky shoreline are right, poppers will work for surface action.

Good to know, I am going to try wooly buggers, now with poppers I know they work wonders on large mouth but never expect smallies to hit them, i have always had the idea that smallies feed below the surface.

Re: Best Fly for Small Mouth Tactic
I do catch a lot of smallies below the surface. On spinners and diving plugs. We have a lot of river miles where the water passes by alternating side canyons and basalt bluffs. In the warm months you go from warm air to cool air as you float along the shoreline due to the canyon effects. Any place there is good rip-rap from the canyons or bordering a nice deep bluff I have been able to catch smallies on the surface. I like to fish surface flies and lures best for the added excitement.
Poppers on the fly rod and popping type plugs seem to work fine.
